In 1967, a white photographer named Graham Dryer visited Thanda Private Game Reserve in South Africa and captured a story that portrays that even lions can be caring. It all began with a little quest for adventure. Graham decided to follow the Sunday Pan, one of the most admired lion prides in the reserve at that time. He secretly followed when they were going out of their abode, with the hope of capturing interesting fights between the lions and their preys, but something strange happened instead.

The pride consisted of 5 lions. A male lion, one lioness and three young cubs. As they moved together, Graham noticed that the lioness left the pack and ran to a different location. He didn’t follow her, until he heard a familiar sound coming from where she was. It was the sound lions make when they’ve found their preys, or so he thought. The sound didn’t attract only him. The male lion and young cubs also ran towards the source of the sound. By the time Graham got there, he found a fox lying helplessly on the ground, with the female lion moving round it in what appeared to be a circle. The instincts of the male lion kicked in by the time it saw the scene. It was so ready to pounce on the fox and begin to feast, but as was the custom of lions, it was waiting for the female to claim her victory before it made any move. Ideally, it is expected that the lioness will waste no more time, because meal was ready, but the situation was different.

Seeing that the lioness refused to make any move, the male lion began to growl, but that didn’t move the lioness, and when the lion decided to take the bull by the horn and launch for its feast, the female lion roared heavily, making him to stop. It was obvious that the lion and three cubs were confused and wondering what had gone wrong with the female lion. As a human being, Graham thought the lioness’ motherly nature had taken the best of her, and rather than devouring her supposed prey, she was protecting a helpless animal. According to Graham, the situation remained like this for several minutes. He also noted that the lions got tired and all five decided to lay beside the helpless fox. This excited Graham and his curiosity antennas were on high alert, he desperately wanted to know what would happen next. Meanwhile, he didn’t stop taking pictures!

At some point, the male lion rose up with anger. It began to roar against the lioness who wasn’t intimidated by his advances. She roared against the male lion too. Seeing the resilience of the lioness, the lion chose to back out, giving the lioness a cheap victory. Not long after this, Graham heard a loud noise coming from somewhere. He knew without any doubt that it was the sound of lions feeding on their unfortunate prey. His heart sank as he remembered the poor fox. He immediately edged closer for better clarity. Indeed, he saw lions feeding on an animal, but when he looked closer, he realized that it was a different pride and they were feeding on a Buffalo, not a fox. The Sunday Pan ran towards the feasting pride, leaving the fox behind. Graham noted that the fox was able to escape, he also stated, in an interview, that he saw the fox moving around a few days later.

In the 21st century, it’s easy to see women in almost every sector of the economy. But this was not always so. In time past, society never believed that women should work in industries, and when they did, they usually worked on low paying ‘female jobs’. However, the 1940s saw a sudden rise in female workforce, especially in the United States. That period was the first time women worked in factories and were paid high wages like their male counterparts. But, this didn’t last. The sudden rise was to meet a need and as soon as that need was satisfied, women began to get laid off.

Curious to know what happened? The sudden rise in female workforce at that time was because of world war II. The war led to a mighty expansion of the war industry, consequently, there were more vacancies than the males could fill up. As a result of this, the government began encouraging women to get into the workforce. They facilitated this through a campaign led by a woman called Rosie the Riveter. The campaign was tagged ‘we can do it’. It wasn’t long after the campaign started that women began taking up positions in male dominated industries. It was crazy. Both educated and uneducated women were employed and taught how to operate machines or perform specified duties. Nearly everyone who wanted to work had the opportunity to. History has it that even married women and mothers of little children weren’t left out. (By the time the war ended, women were one-third of the entire workforce in USA).

As one would expect, some men weren’t willing to allow their wives to work, probably because they were afraid that some of those jobs were too dangerous, and there was the fear of sexual harassment. But, there was strict guidelines passed over to male bosses on how female workers ought to be dealt with, so the aforementioned problems weren’t as prevalent as they are today. The sad part is, after the war, most of the women were laid off. Those who didn’t lose their jobs were moved to lower positions where they were paid peanuts compared to what men were receiving. This state of work discrimination against women continued to the later part of the 19th century. It was in the 20th century that women began to rise in the business world. Today, there are probably about the same number of female CEOs as there are male CEOs.

There is no telling exactly what the future holds, but predictions can be made. Judging from the way the industrial world is moving, there may never be any time in future where women would be discriminated against. In fact, many studies show that the gig economy is becoming a better option among college students, which mean we would be having more of individuals working from the comfort of their homes than from the same corporate building. The result of this is that, issues like sexual harassment and gender discrimination in the workplace would soon be forgotten.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, you would have heard (most likely in the news) of the admission scandal going on in top Ivy league institutions. It’s so rampant these days that even people residing beyond the shores of America are beginning to hear the stories. If you are like most people, you would see this as bad, but hang on till you see the full picture – it’s terrific!

A lady who is a professional writer took on to her social media handle recently to share a post that clearly explains the nature of the education scandal going on in colleges. Obviously, the post was an eye-opener and was embraced by a lot of people – apart from the tons of comments, the post was instantly shared by 30K people. Being an elite writer, the OP was constantly in the light of the happenings in and around Ivy colleges. According to her, rich parents would contact her to help with writing professional resumes, bios or personal essays for their kids who couldn’t write well. The implication of this was, the kids will be admitted into the colleges almost without any objection because of the wonderful essays they present. But that’s not all. These rich kids have the privilege of being personally tutored by experts in skills like test preps, interview skills, idea generation and so on. This sets the kids above their mates, and even if they were below average, the experts hired by their parent will see to it that they passed through college successfully. The writer mentioned that she wrote undergraduate and graduate essays for some of these kids, and what she was doing most of the time was correcting errors and fine-tuning the essays to make professional sense.

Most people think that it all ends when the rich kids graduate from college, but, no. College is actually a step in the way. After college, the connections the parents of these kids have, together with the enviable fact that they passed through Ivy league colleges put them in good positions to be hired by top companies in the country. And when this happens, you will think that those kids will mess up at work because they were helped through college, but this is seldom the case. These corporations will hire experts who will coach their new employees on professional ethics and the art of building amazing personal brands, how to show their wealth to the public without having to appear to be bragging, and all. With this, the rich folks continue to climb up the ladder of success and achievements. They will equally take their children and children’s children through the same process, making it a cycle of the-rich-gets-richer.
Clearly, what was once the American dream has slowly turned into the American nightmare. People in the low and middle class will have to hit some kind of grand jackpot to ever sail through the system designed to favor the rich.

Most people are scared of death.
A lot of us don’t show it, but on the death bed, during the time people are about transiting to the other side of life, you will see fear clearly spelled out on their faces. Of course, not everyone, but a majority of persons. Especially those who regret not taking advantage of opportunities when they came. No one can say for sure if people grieve after taking their last breath, but we do know that family and friends on earth grief their lives out. When people are bereaved, they are supposed to be comforted by other friends and family, but it’s quite unfortunate that people tend to take advantage of human emotions and squeeze out cash from those who mourn. This is fast becoming a norm in the capitalist driven world, where prices can go up at any time. Below are the major ways bereaved family members are scammed during their mourning season.

The first is embalming. Raise your hands if you believe embalming is compulsory. Many people think it is, but there is nowhere in the law where it is stated that embalming is a must. Chemically preserving a body is only necessary when you need to transport the body for a long distance or when you desire to postpone the burial. Some people believe embalming protects public health, but a dead body does not pose as much threat to the public as a living person. In fact, the only thing relating to the public is the fact that the embalmers are at risk of getting infected by toxic chemicals used in the embalming process.

Next up is the use of caskets. Except you are about having a grand celebration, an average casket will be okay. Protective or sealed caskets do not make much difference, because dead bodies still rot in airtight conditions. Also, the only difference between metal and wood caskets is the way they were made and the beauty they emit. Nothing more. If you have the money and wish to make the burial ceremony glamorous, then go for fancy caskets, otherwise, even rentals will do the job.

Last is the myth about funeral homes. The truth is, you don’t need a funeral home. They are only an option, and you can choose to reduce their involvement to the barest minimum. If you want, you can bury the dead in your home, family burial site, or use natural burial sites where you lay the body in the dirt and let it serve as tree food. In a bid to make you patronize them, some burial homes will tell you certain things are illegal when in reality, they are not. Do not let anyone prey on your ignorance, it’s advisable to get some knowledge about the stand of the law concerning burial – because, after all is said and done, we are all going to lose a loved one someday – you can do this by reading blog posts online, following YouTube channels like Ask A Mortician or seeking professional advice.

Some things in life are better felt than explained. Trying to explain them to the uninitiated would almost always be a wasted effort, because they just won’t get the clear picture. Have you ever been in situations where you try hard to explain certain experiences to people but to no avail?
Poverty is one of such things. Its hard to explain poverty to individuals who have been feeding from silver spoons all their lives. In this post, we shall consider the conversation that went on between a supposedly poor tumblr user who is trying to explain his poverry to his rich friend. The conversation between these friends only goes on to mirrow what most people are experiencing daily.

The conversation was at length, so we would only pick and paraphrase the parts that matter most to this post. The tumblr user started the conversation by stating his struggle to make his rich friend understand why poverty is terrible, and how difficult it is to get out of poverty. Consistent with what most rich people would do, the rich friend suggested that his buddy saved some amount of money weekly. He asked his friend to save at least $5 weekly, but that’s the problem. How can one afford to save when what he gets is not even enough to take care of his most basic needs? The poor friend explained that he tried saving, but something will just come up and wipe it all off. He was having occasional health challenges, and that was the major reason he couldn’t get to save money. He also stated that his family weren’t in abject poverty while he was growing up. They lived in a good house and the kids went to school, at least. But their mum had to work 2-3 jobs. Even at that, they depended on the government for feeding. After a lengthy conversation, the rich friend began to understand the situation, and he confessed he would never have believed his friend had to depend on the government for feeding.

Series of comments followed the posts. The comments, were a mix, but basically, some people seemed to be surprised and a majority of the comments supported the view that poverty is a terrible cycle. So terrible, only few people get to escape its claws. What do you think? Surely poverty is real and indeed the cycle can be overwhelming, but the fact that some people could conquer it and live the lives they want should tell you that there is a way out. Of course, not an easy one, but one that opens up to people who are dissatisfied with their position, desire more from life and go for it.

If, for any reason, you aren’t comfortable with your current financial level, rather than bash in the harshness of the cycle of poverty, seek the way out. Your freedom begins when you start believing there is a way out. Next thing to do, seek mentors and ask intelligent questions. If you ask the right people, you will get the right answers, and when you act on the tips given, you will find that you are gradually beginning to create the life you desire.

Imagine you are in a terrible situation, and the next 5 minutes will determine your fate. If you aren’t tired with life, you will surely find a way to save your life, right? It’s the same thing with being trapped in a building with an active shooter. Studies show that it takes the police an average of 5 minutes to arrive any crime scene. That’s about how long it will take for your fate to be decided if a crazy active shooter invades your home, school, office, or any other building you find yourself.

However, you don’t have to panic about this. There are certain steps you can take to prevent yourself from getting hurt (or at most, from dying). They teach this a lot in self defense schools, but the masses seldom know about these safety tips. This is the major reason why over 40,000 people died in 2017 from the bullets of active shooters. That’s not all, in 2018 – just recently – about 113 school children were killed by active shooters. These aren’t statistics from the East, these things happened in America. It therefore goes without saying that there is a grave need for people to upgrade their self defense skills. The old duck-and-cover system simply doesn’t work anymore.

Thankfully, a twitter user, “V”, took on to twitter to share some of the active shooter lessons she learnt from work. She started the thread like this:
“I received active shooter training at work today that I feel will save my life in the unfortunate (and likely) event that someone will open fire in public so I’m gonna share my takeaways. Some stuff is obvious, the rest might not be,” The thread went on to become very popular, and obviously, helpful but some persons had a problem with the “likely” she used in her opening paragraph. V took her time to explain the reasons behind her choice of the word. Leveraging upon the recent active shooter statistics, including the unbelievable number of victims in recent times, V was able to convince the followers of the thread that their chances of being in an active shooter situation was high. That being said, she proceeded to sharing the key points she’d learnt from her active shooter training. She called them the “ABC’S to remember in an active shooter scenario”. They are:
A- Avoid
B- Barricade
C- Counter
S- Survive

Most of the points seem like common sense that everybody should know without being told, but, it’s hard to try to focus and think properly when in a panic situation, however, knowing what to do before that time comes, will help you swing into action almost subconsciously. The first point – Avoid – literally means to exit the scene (if you can, and) as soon as possible. But if you are in a situation where escape isn’t possible, look for a way to create a barricade. On this second point, V stressed that people shouldn’t hide under chairs and tables, because those are the places active shooters would expect you to be. She noted that, if possible, the individual should sneak up on the wall behind the door – and shut the door, barricading it with any available tool. If it happens that the barricade didn’t work out as planned, you will have to brace up yourself to attack the enemy. If you are not a fighter, that’s okay, you still have hope. You can do silly things like throwing papers at the shooter. Here, you are at an advantage because, one, you are not where the shooter is expecting you to be, and two, the room is dark, but you know where the shooter is (assuming you already switched off the lights – which you should). If you are a fighter, cool. Use your advantage of sight to attack the shooter. Most shooters use short guns because they are easy to conceal. Go for the barrel of the gun. If you are wise, move it’s barrel away from you. The shooter may shoot, but this would be to your advantage, because, with what you did, the gun would have to be fixed before he (or she) can shoot again. Use this time to hit your attacker badly. Active shooters are likely to have second weapons, so you have to be both fast and efficient. It goes without saying that you shouldn’t go for the muzzle of the gun, because…you will get shot. Lastly, survive. If in any case, the attacker wounds you, do not stay there and pity yourself or say your last prayers, try to escape, because being shot is sometimes a far cry from dying.

We live in a knowledge driven world. And although, the level of communication and knowledge available in this century could only be imagined long ago, we have gotten so used to knowledge that we can’t do without it. For instance, in the days when letters were the only means of communication, people would send letters and not expect to get response until days or weeks (or even months) have passed. But, the situation have changed SBD with the change came some degree of impatience. Right now, if you send someone an email, you would be looking back your mail box an hour later, expecting a reply… you’re likely to even get frustrated when the person on the other end hasn’t replied.

But there is a good side to this. The advent of technology and internet have incredibly helped in urgent situations that require immediate attention. It was the need for immediate attention that made UK based product manager, Nick Herbert to create an app that will literally force his 13-year-old to respond to his SMS and phone calls. Once the app is installed, it will be able to take note of text messages entering the phone. The app functions like an alarm. Once a text message enters the phone, it will begin to buzz, and only two options would be displayed on the screen: the option for snooze and the option to cancel. The person on the other end would be notified about whichever option you decide to click. The phone cannot be used when the app is buzzing because you can’t click anything except the the options available. If you really don’t like to reply the other person, you could put off your phone or put it on silence. That was what Nick’s son did occasionally – he silenced his phone.

The app didn’t just end up for family use. It was uploaded on Google play store as ReplyASAP, and it is still available for free download. However, the user will have to pay a small fee if he decides to connect it with more than one person. As at 2017, the app had over 70,000 downloads, and this is despite having mixed views. Some people liked the application and even commended Nick for his creativity, while others (most of them were parents) think that the app would make people manipulative and overcontrolling. To these people, children should be given proper home training and taught how to respect adults. If any parent successfully does this, there wouldn’t be any need for applications like ReplyASAP.

One of the reviews on Google play store bordered around this point. Nick replied the comment, and (among other things), said that the app cannot be installed without consent of both parties. Which technically rules out the idea of it being used to manipulate people. In fact, the reason the app was created was to get kids’ attention in emergency situations. Nick also stressed that kids could equally use the app to contact their parents in emergency situations. In essence, when used properly, the app would prove to be productive rather than destructive.

Nearly everyone that gets married will at some point in their lifetime expect to get children, but, that’s about where the similarity ends. People have different views and perspectives when it comes to getting children and rearing them. Some want only particular sex – especially those in Africa and the Middle East. Others want a combination of both and will go as far as adopting to get what they want. Then there is the number of kids. This varies widely, except in regions where the government autonomously impose a specific limit to childbearing. In places where there are no rules to childbearing, people tend to give birth to as many (or as little kids as they want). And in very few cases, kids come by ‘mistake’.

But, it doesn’t really matter how the kids come. So far they are in this world, ‘somebody gotta train them’. There have been many arguments bordering around how kids ought to be trained, but the truth still remains that there is no particular way of training kids. Recently, a Tumblr user started a conversation about how parents shouldn’t expect their kids to grow up as mini versions of themselves. According to her, kids will eventually find their paths in life as they grow up, there is no point trying to make them into who you want them to be because they come as unique individuals with very different personalities – these personalities will begin to show up as they grow. It was obvious, from the multiple responses, that people bought into that idea. There were different contributions from parents and wannabe parents, and even from grown-ups who had had their fair share of parental training while growing up. One of the comments that really stood out (because it aligned with the topic) was from a lady whose handle was ‘floral-and-fine’. According to her testimony, she was lucky to have parents who didn’t force her into anything. Her parents only supported whatever path she decided to follow in life. For instance, she is an artist, but she wasn’t forced into art. Albeit, her parents supported her career choice. She even reiterated that her dad usually try to participate in her artwork. Not that he loved art so much, he was just being a supportive dad. One more point she noted bordered around her middle name – Cristina – she said her mother purposely removed the ‘H’ from the name because she wasn’t sure her daughter would love to have Christ in her name. For all she knew, her daughter could grow up to become an atheist.

Cristina’s story drives home a very important point – parents should not choose the destinies of their children for them, but support them in whatever they do. But again, this idea won’t be accepted by most philosophers and religious people. Because studies have shown that parents can influence the paths children choose in life and that children can (as a result of external influences) choose paths that are not right for them. Paths that are not, in actual sense, their destinies.

In conclusion, it’s vital for every parent to have a value system that guide him or her. With a strong value system, you won’t be dissuaded by the opinions of others, but you will train your child the best way you know and (hopefully) in the end, you will be glad you did.

Weddings are one of those occasions that people look out for a lot. For most people, they start envisioning their wedding day right from childhood. In fact, research shows that most ladies have a rough idea of what their wedding day should look like even before they leave the teen age. It’s hard to exactly pinpoint when weddings started, but we know that the ‘white wedding culture’ become hugely popular in 1840, after Queen Victoria of England wore a flowering white gown on the day she got wedded to Albert of Saxe-Coburg. The wedding ring is one thing that has always been associated with weddings, and contrary to popular notion, people didn’t start using wedding rings in England. History has it that wedding rings could be dated back to about 4800 years ago, in ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Jewish cultures.

Although people all over the world have embraced white wedding, couples have always gone out of their ways to spice up their white wedding and make it stand out from the crowd. Those are incredible moves because if you are anything like the average person, you will only get to celebrate your wedding once, so you should make the most of it, right? Right! That’s what the couple in our story did.

Jesse and Audrey decided to go beyond the norm with their wedding. They created a type of wedding ceremony they’d always wanted to attend. Everything about their wedding was unusual. They had 18 different cakes, lots of fun games during the reception, costume parades, and a mini-theater for the guests to enjoy great movies. But, perhaps, none of these stand out more than their choice of dress. To begin with, the groom and his men didn’t wear the usual tux. “who wants to wear a tux?” he said when interviewed. Instead, they wore tuxedo print hoodies. Although the bride wore an actual wedding gown, she wasn’t the only one on a wedding gown. All the guests got to wear their old bridal dresses again. If you wanted to identify the bride, you couldn’t go searching for the lady in a bridal gown, there were just too many of them, but Audrey stood out because of the color and texture of her gown, which according to her, was inspired by Cinderella and Elsa.

Guess who the flower girls were? If your mind began to imagine some young 5-10 years old, then you are wrong. The actual flower girls were older than the couple themselves. To better spice up the occasion, Jesse and Audrey decided their mums became the flower girls. It was indeed a great sight. Like the traditional weddings, Jesse and Audrey had a reception after the official wedding, but that didn’t stop them from making it unique. During the reception, the guest had a chance to enjoy good dining and movie soundtrack at the “sugar bar”. They also played games like Simpsons arcade game and some classic video games that the groom loved so much.
The wedding ended with a costume party.
Certainly, the creativity of Jesse and Audrey will inspire other couples to go beyond the norm. What do you think?
