We live in a knowledge driven world. And although, the level of communication and knowledge available in this century could only be imagined long ago, we have gotten so used to knowledge that we can’t do without it. For instance, in the days when letters were the only means of communication, people would send letters and not expect to get response until days or weeks (or even months) have passed. But, the situation have changed SBD with the change came some degree of impatience. Right now, if you send someone an email, you would be looking back your mail box an hour later, expecting a reply… you’re likely to even get frustrated when the person on the other end hasn’t replied.

But there is a good side to this. The advent of technology and internet have incredibly helped in urgent situations that require immediate attention. It was the need for immediate attention that made UK based product manager, Nick Herbert to create an app that will literally force his 13-year-old to respond to his SMS and phone calls. Once the app is installed, it will be able to take note of text messages entering the phone. The app functions like an alarm. Once a text message enters the phone, it will begin to buzz, and only two options would be displayed on the screen: the option for snooze and the option to cancel. The person on the other end would be notified about whichever option you decide to click. The phone cannot be used when the app is buzzing because you can’t click anything except the the options available. If you really don’t like to reply the other person, you could put off your phone or put it on silence. That was what Nick’s son did occasionally – he silenced his phone.

The app didn’t just end up for family use. It was uploaded on Google play store as ReplyASAP, and it is still available for free download. However, the user will have to pay a small fee if he decides to connect it with more than one person. As at 2017, the app had over 70,000 downloads, and this is despite having mixed views. Some people liked the application and even commended Nick for his creativity, while others (most of them were parents) think that the app would make people manipulative and overcontrolling. To these people, children should be given proper home training and taught how to respect adults. If any parent successfully does this, there wouldn’t be any need for applications like ReplyASAP.

One of the reviews on Google play store bordered around this point. Nick replied the comment, and (among other things), said that the app cannot be installed without consent of both parties. Which technically rules out the idea of it being used to manipulate people. In fact, the reason the app was created was to get kids’ attention in emergency situations. Nick also stressed that kids could equally use the app to contact their parents in emergency situations. In essence, when used properly, the app would prove to be productive rather than destructive.

Nearly everyone that gets married will at some point in their lifetime expect to get children, but, that’s about where the similarity ends. People have different views and perspectives when it comes to getting children and rearing them. Some want only particular sex – especially those in Africa and the Middle East. Others want a combination of both and will go as far as adopting to get what they want. Then there is the number of kids. This varies widely, except in regions where the government autonomously impose a specific limit to childbearing. In places where there are no rules to childbearing, people tend to give birth to as many (or as little kids as they want). And in very few cases, kids come by ‘mistake’.

But, it doesn’t really matter how the kids come. So far they are in this world, ‘somebody gotta train them’. There have been many arguments bordering around how kids ought to be trained, but the truth still remains that there is no particular way of training kids. Recently, a Tumblr user started a conversation about how parents shouldn’t expect their kids to grow up as mini versions of themselves. According to her, kids will eventually find their paths in life as they grow up, there is no point trying to make them into who you want them to be because they come as unique individuals with very different personalities – these personalities will begin to show up as they grow. It was obvious, from the multiple responses, that people bought into that idea. There were different contributions from parents and wannabe parents, and even from grown-ups who had had their fair share of parental training while growing up. One of the comments that really stood out (because it aligned with the topic) was from a lady whose handle was ‘floral-and-fine’. According to her testimony, she was lucky to have parents who didn’t force her into anything. Her parents only supported whatever path she decided to follow in life. For instance, she is an artist, but she wasn’t forced into art. Albeit, her parents supported her career choice. She even reiterated that her dad usually try to participate in her artwork. Not that he loved art so much, he was just being a supportive dad. One more point she noted bordered around her middle name – Cristina – she said her mother purposely removed the ‘H’ from the name because she wasn’t sure her daughter would love to have Christ in her name. For all she knew, her daughter could grow up to become an atheist.

Cristina’s story drives home a very important point – parents should not choose the destinies of their children for them, but support them in whatever they do. But again, this idea won’t be accepted by most philosophers and religious people. Because studies have shown that parents can influence the paths children choose in life and that children can (as a result of external influences) choose paths that are not right for them. Paths that are not, in actual sense, their destinies.

In conclusion, it’s vital for every parent to have a value system that guide him or her. With a strong value system, you won’t be dissuaded by the opinions of others, but you will train your child the best way you know and (hopefully) in the end, you will be glad you did.

There are few things that give joy to newlyweds like the joy of pregnancy or the joy of hearing the first cry of your baby. Indeed, children are a blessing to the home and the society at large. Childbirth is the only way human civilization is sustained. And there is no way we are going into extinction because children are continually coming into the world… almost on a daily basis. Speaking of childbirth, there are stories here and there concerning unusual experiences associated with new children coming into the world. They are very few, though. Some are amazing while others are… horrifying. However, have you ever remotely thought it possible for children to be born twice? In this post, we bring you a real-world story of a child born twice. Stay tight.

It all began when Margaret was four months pregnant for her first child. As was expected, she was having a routine ultrasound to ensure her baby was in good condition. Then, on this particular occasion, the doctor realized her unborn child was having a rare tumor called teratoma. The cause for this tumor is yet to be determined, but it occurs more in girls than in boys. In certain cases, the tumor can be treated when the child is delivered, but Margaret’s case was different. It was a serious situation and the fetus with the tumor was competing for her blood. Medically, it won’t be long before her heart stopped pumping blood. Something had to be done urgently. The only solution was a weird one. Margaret would have to be operated upon. Her fetus would be removed and operated, then her uterus will be sewed back after the baby is successfully treated and placed back in the uterus. It wasn’t difficult for the to-be-parents to agree because it was their first baby and they wanted to “give her a chance at life”

The operation was a critical one. Many things could go wrong, and there wasn’t any absolute certainty that both the lives of the fetus and the to-be-mom will be safe. But they pulled through anyway. The fetus lasted about 20 long minutes outside her mother’s womb when she was being treated. Most of the tumors were successfully removed. In short, it was a successful operation. Mother and child pulled it through. About 20 weeks later, when the baby had reached full pregnancy time, she was delivered into the world as healthy as a baby could be. This was her second birth. Lynlee Hope – as the baby is called – came into this world because of the sheer faith and courage demonstrated by her parents. Her story drives home very important lessons that every new parent should learn. Never give up on your child, no matter what. The second point is, regular medical checkup during pregnancy can never be overemphasized. The tumor couldn’t have been discovered early if Margaret didn’t keep a routine appointment with her doctor.

The TV show What Would YouDo? recently conducted a social experiment to see how people would react when they see a child with Tourette syndrome being bullied.

The result, as captured in the video, was stunning. Many strangers delivered a standing-ovation worthy speech to the bullies. The young actress who played the victim, Jillian, actually grew up with Tourette and has personally experienced this type of bullying.

It was hard to watch the bullies mocking and verbally assaulting a helpless kid. Many kind Samaritans got very upset; in fact, one of them even started tearing up. They all tried to educate the bullies about sympathy towards other human beings and Tourette’s.

When the bullies called her weird, one stranger responded, “We’re all weird. We’re human beings. Don’t make fun of her.” Jillian found this to be such kind, amazing words. The same man also told the bullies, “I don’t like it when people bully people or demean them for something they are not educated about.”

Some gently advised the bullies to learn about the condition. All of them sternly told the bullies to leave Jillian alone and tried to comfort Jillian.

This video was similar to the Burger King commercial/anti-bullying PSA back in 2017. In that commercial, however, most customers remained silent. So the Burger employees tried to teach those customers a lesson using their Whoppers.

What is Tourette Syndrome?

Tourette syndrome is a lifelong neurological disorder, which most often begins between the ages of 2 and 21. Not all who have this condition swear involuntarily. Only about 10% does. About 1 in 162 children (0.6%) have diagnosed or undiagnosed Tourette. In addition, most children diagnosed with Tourette reportedly also have at least one other mental or developmental disorder.

How Bad is Bullying in the US?

A kid gets bullied every 7 minutes in the US. And only 4 in 100 adults will intervene. According to a CDC report, 19% of high schoolers were recently bullied on school property and 14% have been cyber-bullied.

Besides the psychological and physical toll on the victims, bullying has profound impact on socioeconomic construct. Studies show that both bullies and bullying victims are more likely to experience poverty and professional failure their adulthood. They are also more likely to commit crimes and suffer from substance addictions.

Louisiana ranked #1 as the state with the worst bullying problems, followed by Arkansas and Missouri. See the full list here.

How Do We Stop Bullying?

Adults can reduce bullying by responding consistently and quickly when they witness such acts in their community. In fact, this is the only way to eliminate bullying behavior long-term.

Some suggestions for what to do when you see youth bullying:

Question the bullying behavior

Redirect the conversation using humor

Take a walk with the target of bullying to help diffuse the situation

Intervene as a group with other bystanders

Reach out to the victim privately later to check in

How different is your family from others? Each family is exclusive in their own little way and we bet yours is too. Take a look at these families whose existence will baffle you!

The Dugger’s family: German and Michelle got married and postponed having kids till four years later. Unfortunately, the contraceptives she’d used affected her and resulted in several miscarriages. As devoted Christians, they claimed to ask God to bless them with many children and they ended up having 19 kids with all their names starting with J. wondering what’s weird about them? The eldest son, Josh confessed on their reality TV show that she has fingered 5 girls including his sisters.

The second largest living family is that fathered by Chinaman Diana Marchena who live in a 100 rooms, 4-story house with his thirty (30) wives, 94 children and 33 grandchildren. He admits to marrying 10 women in a single day and he is the head of the sect which permits polygamy.

The world’s biggest family ever was the Vaset’s, a Russian family with a total of 69 children; 67 of whom survived infancy. The Vaset’s 69 children are made up of sixteen pairs of twins and seven triplets. The Vaset’s record as the largest family has been since 1782 and doesn’t look like it will change soon.

The Bunker Brothers: these are a pair of Siamese twins from a small village, Siam (present-day Thailand). Chang and Eng grew up at all expense, became rich and got married to two ladies; all sharing one King-sized bed. They had 21 kids altogether. It wasn’t until the wives had a fallout and started living separately; then, the brothers operate a two-week shift between the two ladies. Chang died in January 1974 and Eng followed two and a half hours later.

Now we know about weird families from around the globe. If you’d like to know about more weird families, why not watch the video below for several other weird families. Thank you.

There’s no denying that the screaming, crying and kicking associated with your child’s temper tantrums are humiliating and makes you feel like an epic failure. Every parent will experience a public meltdown at least once in their life. The ear-piercing squeals and wild kicks coming from your child will not only make you feel helpless, but everyone around you will be judging. There is typically a reason associated with your child’s temper tantrum. The golden rule of calming a child is either feed them, get them to rest or give them an activity to engage in. While these three tactics work in most cases, there are times when a child will meltdown simply because they cannot control or regulate their emotions.

As a parent, it’s important to know what makes your child tick; what will help them overcome certain emotions the fastest. Studies show that the most common reasons for child temper tantrums are not getting their way, taking away favorite toys, trips to stores and switching activities.

We are thankful to the soldiers for fighting to keep us safe so that we can live a peaceful life. They risked their lives to protect us and died for us. How hard it must be for the soldiers themselves and for their families, especially the children. They have to miss out on so many occasions like weddings, birthdays and parties, even something as special as watching the birth of their child.

Brooks Lindsey, a military man from Mississippi, missed the chance to see the first few minutes of his newborn baby’s life. Since soldiers are allowed to travel back home for their child’s delivery only on one condition if the labor is complicated. Brooks thought that he would not get a chance to see his newborn but then he got a call from his wife Haley’s doctor and it changed everything.

The doctor suggested her to be in a hospital in an hour because the labor must be induced. “I received a call from my doctor that my pressures were too high, and the baby was being stressed and I was preeclamptic,” she said.

In these circumstances, Brooks got the permission to travel back home, but he could only book a flight for the next morning. “I was sure that we would already have a baby by then!” said Haley. Unfortunately, his flight was delayed but he was allowed to see everything through the phone.

Haley said: “My Doctor told my mother-in-law to pull the phone out and show him what was going on.”

Airport personnel allowed him to watch till it was finished, then they heard Haley’s doctor shouting “Don’t let him board the flight! She’s here! She’s here!”.

Brooks finally reached to meet his daughter and had the chance to spend 4 days with his family.
